College Students and Overdrinking

Drinking is a stereotypical American college experience. Though binge drinking is common across all ages, the highest proportion of those at risk for binge drinking is 18-24 years of age with 25.6% of those surveyed reporting to bingeing, according to a new study released by the CDC showing the latest findings about binge drinking.

Binge drinking is defined as drinking 5 or more alcoholic drinks in a short period of time for men, and 4 or more for women.

Binge Drinking in College

The traditional college student falls within that 18-24 years of age bracket. Friends, roommates, classmates have easier access to purchasing alcohol, and often newly away from home and supervision, young adults engage in riskier drinking behaviors. Studies show 4 out of 5 college students drink, and 1 in 5 reported three or more binge drinking episodes in the prior two weeks, according to the CDC.

The second highest percentage of those at risk for binge drinking is high schoolers at 24.2% of those surveyed.

Binge drinking is a common public health problem. In fact, more than 33 million adults binge drink each year, and the percentage of adults who binge drink hasn’t declined for more than 15 years
